On December 13th I shipped, as usual, by Priority Mail, a quilt to a 4th injured warrior in Maryland. It has not yet been received. Through tracking I have learned it made it to a nearby mail facility, but that's as far as it goes. My heart wants to believe it is lost...my mind tells me it has been stolen. That is a first for this project, either way. I will re-ship through a connection I have in that area who will personally deliver this quilt. What frustrates and angers me, is that whoever opened that box (if indeed that's what has happened), read the brochure and card, the label on the quilt, even just the address on the box! To think that someone would deter this gift from reaching it's destination is beyond my comprehension. The women who willingly and lovingly donate their time, talents, and resources to this project have been cheated. The soldier who was to receive the quilt has been cheated. My prayer is that whatever hands it fell into, guilt will win out at some point and it will be used for it's intended purpose. I know that person may never read this post unless they go to it from the brochure. If they do...no hard feelings, I guess you needed it more than the hero who has sacrificed his health and future for you and me. . .

With sadness in my heart I read of the four Indiana National Guardsmen lost in Afghanistan this past week. Please remember the families and friends of these brave men in the coming days and months. . . We will do our best to reach them with our quilts.

I've never been good at soliciting funds, but the account is running low again. We have been able to accomplish SO MUCH because of the generosity of so many. I am at a loss of words to explain just what it means to Steve & Ronda and their family, and to me, to have the support of you all! From the families we've met comes gratitude as well. I have gained some precious, lifelong friends because of Quilts of Honor...Travis would be pleased.

Please consider how you may help us continue to serve in gratitude and love for 2012.

Quilt distributions and Thank-you's!!

Where has summer gone?? Soon the leaves will be turning and the snow falling! Our project continues to move forward, seeking ways to reach the families of the fallen. . .

A very HUGE Thank-you to Chris of Lolly's Fabrics in Shipshewana, who delivered 21 finished quilts to me this week! Her store participated in a Quilts of Valor/Soldier Quilts project, and she very generously donated some to our project. What beautiful works of art and care and compassion we have been receiving! We have been able to finish quilts with the donations given earlier this year and begin to set up appointments for distribution.

Steve and Ronda Hunsberger coordinate the meetings with other families and have been a tremendous source of support, encouragement, and help. Their heart of compassion for others who, like themselves, have experienced the ultimate sacrifice is amazing! We have been able to meet with 5 families so far and plans for more meetings are in the works. If you are reading this and are the family member of a fallen soldier, or personally know someone, PLEASE contact me. We are doing our best to reach the families in Indiana, but it takes time. It can be from any state, we are focusing on Indiana, but will certainly not turn away anyone! It has been our mission from the start to share support, love, and compassion through the comfort of a quilt.

While in my heart I wish that I would not be meeting these families for this reason, it is an honor and a privilege to spend some time with them. . .to hear their stories and the stories of their loved one. My life changed on June 27, 2008 and God willing, I will never be the same!

Following are a few pictures from our recent gatherings. I'm choosing not to identify individuals to respect their privacy. When you look at them, see the faces of the men and women who serve to keep us free. Say a prayer for the ones left behind, and one for those still serving and protecting. I will never stop reminding us all. . . our freedom is not free!! Many, many thanks to the American Legion Riders, Sons of the American Legion, American Legion Post 154, and the American Legion Auxiliary 154! Other personal monetary donations have been received as well. Many hours of sewing and quilting have been donated by a wonderful group of ladies. I was able to set up a display at Nappanee's Second Saturday event on June 12th. A customer from the store where I work dropped of five completed quilt tops, our sewing club made quilt blocks, and several more ladies are bringing in finished quilts in the next few weeks! I am completely humbled and extremely grateful!! Steve and Ronda have been able to make contact with a couple local families and have been delivering the completed quilts. God bless them for their willingness to share in this way. We are currently looking for a way to contact the families of the fallen here in Indiana so that they know we are "legit". If you are reading this blog and have lost a loved one in conflict since 9/11 or personally know someone who has, PLEASE email me at mamabech@msn.com with contact information. We want to get our quilts wrapped around those who need them most. . .

Progress!!

Thank-you never seems like enough to say when people give so generously! The last year has been difficult. . . As I've sought direction and guidance as to where to go with this project, I kept seemingly running into walls instead of open doors. In December in a conversation with two good friends, things changed. Thank you Mike and Tracey for your generous donation that allowed me to purchase the materials I needed to finish the 12 quilt tops that have been laying in my sewing room waiting. Through them I also had the honor of speaking to the American Legion Riders of Nappanee. Before I left that evening, I had a check in hand that will allow me to do some great things to keep the project alive! And it's not stopping! Meetings are being scheduled with other organizations that want to hear about what we are doing and possibly support us. Thank you Mike for being excited and for spreading the word and handing out brochures! After talking to Ronda about some ideas shared with me, it was exciting to learn she and Steve had also been thinking of some of the same things. A few changes will be made to how we distribute quilts. Our focus, for now, is going to be the families of fallen Indiana soldiers. Our desire is to continue to bring comfort in a small way, and to show our support for those who serve and those who sacrifice. As we work out the details, I will share more at a later date.
And I cannot forget to say a HUGE Thank-you to the faithful women who help me sew, quilt, and finish our quilts! They are some of the most caring, kind, and wonderful people and great friends! Thank-you Carolyn, Sandy, Rose Ann, Lynn, & Connie for jumping in to help keep the ball rolling! Special thanks to Lois for her beautiful works of art and the time and care she puts into every quilt she sews. I know I have not mentioned every person by name, and I apologize. I am overwhelmed. . . God is good! I am excited to be able to be a part of this project. I am humbled by the response. My heart aches for those who have lost a loved one in service to our country. May we never, ever forget that our freedom is not free!

Time flies...

There are no good excuses for my lapse in keeping this current. So much has happened since I last wrote.
June 27th marked the 2nd anniversary of Travis' death. Not a day goes by that his sacrifice is not remembered. Thank-you Travis, and the thousands like you, you gave it all...
Travis' sister Kelsey and his buddy, Luis Morales, were wed this past July in a beautiful outdoor ceremony at the family home. Congratulations Mr. and Mrs. Morales and may the Lord bless you with a long and happy life together!!
Travis' brother Kyle continues his training with the National Guard. God bless you Kyle and Samantha as you serve our country!
I am still in need of help to complete some unfinished quilts. I have not been able to make a delivery, because I do not want to go with just a few quilts, when I know a greater number are needed. I just received a donation on Saturday that will help tremendously! I will admit, I have been somewhat discouraged...in the beginning stages response was amazing, almost overwhelming at times. It has slowed down alot. I know times are tough for many, but the fact remains, daily our soldiers are working to protect us and the freedoms we hold dear. I cannot let this project die...no more then I can stop reminding people that our Freedom is NOT free!
Please, won't you prayerfully consider how you might help the Quilts of Honor - Travis Project before 2010 comes to a close...
Thank-you in advance and God bless you!

Help is needed. . .

Time seems to fly by so quickly these days. . . Here we are, already into April and there is SO much to be done! We are in need of many things to keep this project going. First, time. . . such a valuable commodity! I have been given 12 pieced quilt tops. A couple need a border added to make them a bit larger, and they all need to be quilted, then binding put on. I simply cannot do it by myself, I wish I could. Second, I need the batting and backing to go along with these tops. (Either donated or the funds needed to purchase.) Third, someone willing to do simple machine quilting at little or no charge. Fourth, quilts fully completed. Fifth, help in adding the binding to finished quilts. And sixth, monetary donations to cover the expenses not donated. It costs approximately $80-$150 per quilt to finish, depending on the size. I have received some fabric donations which is greatly appreciated! Right now, we have 20 quilts (once the 12 are complete), and I'd like to have 30. Please consider how you might be able to help us keep supporting the families who have have lost a soldier in the continued war on terror.

Following is a quote from one of the first to receive a quilt from the Travis Project. This young man served alongside Travis in Afghanistan and was with him when he was killed...
"I'd like to thank all of those who support us here in the military. The quilt that I was given has been part of my life in the past few months. I've traveled across the United States with it, it helped me make my travel from North Carolina to California very warm. What it stands for will always be in my heart, I once again thank you all who have been close to us and aided us to feel safe at home once again."

Coming soon . . .

My sincerest apologies for the lapse in adding anything to the blog. Alot has been happening in the past several months that has kept me way too busy! We all watch the news and know that. For me it has taken on a more personal note ever since we lost Travis, and even more since my visit this past May. I have recently learned the 7th Group of Ft. Bragg has lost another 6 men just in the past 3 months. . . that's just one group. I really feel led to deliver quilts to the wives/parents of those men as quickly as possible. I currently have 5 quilt tops that need to be quilted. I would like to have 12-15 to take down. If at all possible I would like to deliver them before Thanksgiving, don't know why, just the time frame the Lord has laid on my heart. I have not made any arrangements yet. I'm in need of the usual. . . everything. Quilt tops, completed quilts, and donations. Someone who would do the machine quilting at little or no cost would be wonderful! Please consider how you might help.

I hope to post on here in a few days a special segment consisting of quotes from those who have received our quilts or been involved in some way. It has been a tremendous blessing to me to hear from so many, and I'd like to share with the rest of you. I'm in the process of getting approval before quoting, and then editing.

On a personal note, please remember my family this week as we approach the 1 year anniversary of my niece's death. . . it's been a long year. We know that Lisa is basking in the presence of our Heavenly Father, but our hearts still ache at our loss.

Dedication of War Memorial in Wakarusa

On Saturday July 18th, more then 300 people turned out for the dedication of the War Memorial and garden in Wakarusa, in honor of Travis and those who have served and are serving our country. What a beautiful day in so many ways...perfect temperatures, sunny skies, and a spirit of patriotism filled the air. The monument area is horseshoe shaped and contains brick pavers with the names, ranks, and branches of service, of citizens with ties to Wakarusa. In the center is a bronze statue of a pair of boots, a rifle, and a helmet. The base of the statue has engravings, which you see pictured below. The National Guard Color Guard was present, bagpipers played, Pastor Harper of Bible Baptist Church played "Taps", and the NorthWood Middle School choir under the direction of Tonya Angle sang, along with Martin Flowers. Travis' father sang the National Anthem as well. A ribbon cutting ceremony led by Town Mgr. Tom Roeder took place, and CPT Don Heichel spoke along with Pastor Paul Commons of Wakarusa Missionary Church. The crowd was a mixture of family, friends, fireman, servicemen, American Legion Riders, veterans, young children and the not so young. All present to pay tribute to sacrifices made, past and present. Near the memorial is a gazebo with a glider, it has become a favorite spot of mine in recent weeks to just sit, reflect, and pray...sometimes shed a few tears. And also close by is "Susie's Garden", a small, beautiful flower garden lovingly tended by Susie and Nick Culp. If you live locally and haven't been back to either of these yet, you're missing out. If you visit us, be sure and stop back to see them, you'll be glad you did.
I've been slow to post anything since my last entry because words fail me. For those who know me well, that doesn't happen very often :) I'm at a loss to describe the emotions that run through me when I stop to pray for those who are serving around the world right now, and for their families. I wish I was physically capable of communicating to each and every one of them what their sacrifice means to me. That's why this Quilt Project began...it has to continue..won't you please help? I have another goal of the first part of October for another delivery, but funds are once again low. Ask yourself if this is something you can help with, and if the answer is yes, contact me.
God bless you all!
Please enjoy the following pictures. In some ways this past year has flown by, in other ways, it has seemed eternally endless. It's been a year of grieving, fond memories, great hope of a heavenly reunion, memorial services, tributes, sharing, and caring. I've met people I probably might never have met had it not been for Travis' death, special people from all walks of life. The common bond is his life, and his love of life, and family, and friends, and his God, and his country. We all wish he were still with us, no doubt, but Travis is OK because he rests in the arms of his heavenly Father. And something else has happened to me too...I stand a little straighter when I see the flag, I pray more fervently for our servicemen, I take life one day at a time now, I love more deeply, and I understand more clearly that freedom is not free. To Steve, Ronda, Kyle, Sam, & Kelsey...thank-you for allowing me to be a part of so much of your lives this past year, I love you all so much! To Luis, Tony, Ramone & Emmy, Ron & Sylvia, Brian S., Brian D., Mike & LeAnna, Patrick, David, & Chris...thank-you for sharing the Travis you knew and for allowing me to be a part of your lives as well. It's been an honor and a privilege and I love you all! May God keep you safe as you continue to serve Him and our country, and may He grant you peace as well...To the many of you who have contributed in some way over the past year, a huge thank-you! You'll never know what your efforts have meant to so many. Please help me keep this project going...I will be revamping it and changing a few things in the new future, but am still taking all forms of donations. There is the possibility of another quilt delivery in the fall, I will let you all know soon...And as always, may the Lord bless you all and may He continue to bless America!

Remembering the fallen and those left behind. . .

I don't even know where to begin this entry. I've tried to keep this about the quilts and not get too personal, but after the week I've experienced, it's hard not to be personal. First, I need to once again offer a HUGE THANK-YOU to everyone who played a part in this project! Some donated finances, some donated quilt tops, whole quilts, free quilting, quilt blocks, and the finishing of the quilts by binding. And my understanding boss, Jeanette Prenkert, donated my work time to allow me to finish in the final days before I left.
I wish every one of you could have made the trip...I will carry with me the personal satisfaction of what we have done, for a lifetime. Unfortunately, we could do more. I saw several people who looked longingly at the quilts and I wished with all my heart I had more to give out. I would like to keep making and "stockpiling" so we don't get caught in a rush again, so if you're willing, keep 'em coming! They are most definitely appreciated! It has spoken volumes to many to know that we care enough to share our time, talents, and resources with those who are serving or have served us.
I was privileged to attend the Gold Star luncheon with Steve and Ronda, in which the families of fallen soldiers were recognized. I was overwhelmed, and not for the only time, at the realization that every table, and there were many, represented a family who had lost a loved one. At the Memorial Service, each name was read and a bell sounded for the names added to the wall...I cannot even put those feelings at that moment into words...sadness, pride, gratitude...don't even touch it. I met wives, mothers, fathers, and children of those men. Faces I'll never forget, I don't WANT to forget. The death of Travis brought the war home...meeting his team put another face on the war...this past week added another whole dimension for me. I have been changed since June 27th, 2008...I see life differently then ever before, I want to laugh more, live better, and love more freely. I have a new family and they reside in North Carolina...I miss them already. I've already received two emails from a sweet lady who tended to us at our get together Thursday night. Her husband is currently deployed, she calls me her new sister. I love it! But there is also alot of hurt and anger out there...pray for my friends to find peace. Some of them have seen and experienced more then you or I could begin to imagine.
The biggest lesson I've learned in the last year is this, we do not know what tomorrow holds...live with no regrets, be sure your loved ones know you love them, and be ready to meet your Savior. I'm not perfect in any way, but I'm doing my best to make my world better...God bless you all!
God Bless our soldiers and their families...

Names of Soldiers honored at the Memorial Service:
Fallen, but not forgotten. . .

SSG Jeremy E Bessa
SSG John C Brite
SSG Jason L Brown
SGT Nicholas A Casey
CPT Richard G Cliff, Jr.
SSG Josepg F Curreri
SSG Anthony D Davis
CPR Benjamin C Dillon
SPC Christopher Gathercole
SSG Travis K Hunsberger
SPC Thomas Duncan III
SSG Frank J Gasper
MSG David L Hurt
MAJ Robert D Lindendau
CPT Shane R Mahaffee
SSG Ryan D Maseth
CW3 Hershel D McCants, Jr.
SFC David L McDowell
SFC Jamie S Nicholas
SFC David Nunez
SGT Timothy P Padgett
SSG Robert J Paul
SSG Robert R Pirelli
CW3 John A Quinlan
SFC Jeffrey M Radamorales
SGT Nicholas A Robertson
SGT William P Rudd
MSG Shawn E Simmons
SSG David W Textor
SGT James E Treber
SFC Michael J Tully
SFC Gary J Vasquez
SPC Travis R Vaughn
CW5 Jamie D Weeks
SSG Joshua R Whitaker
MSG Mitchell W Young

Pictures of Quilts and North Carolina!!

Be patient as you watch the slide show, I had a hard time deciding what to post and what to leave out! This year it means something a little different to me, or maybe I just have looked at it a little differently. I spent today finishing up the quilts for our second phase of this project, adding labels, printing the information flyers, stitching the names of the soldiers receiving the quilts onto pillowcases. As I did so something was different, I was stitching names of several who have given their lives for me...and for you...the first time I did this project, it was for the men who served with Travis, all still with us, thank the Lord. Six of these quilts will go to family of men who didn't come home...I don't ever want to take for granted the sacrifices made by the men and women and their families who serve and protect us on a daily basis. I found myself thinking of the men I met in February, and thanking God again for their lives, and their willingness to go where I won't. I thought of Travis, so young, so full of life, and he gave it all, willingly. Today his mother buried her father...so much sadness in a year's time. And I will unashamedly admit, I wept...tears of sorrow for the losses we have faced, and tears of thankfulness for those who have served in the past and who do so now. Saying "Thank-you" just doesn't seem like enough. I did something else today I don't normally do, I put flowers on my daddy's grave...he's been gone for 35 years now but he proudly served his country during WWII. I honored his service and his memory today. Whatever your beliefs, there is one thing nobody can deny, without the soldiers of the past and present, we would not have the freedoms we enjoy today. So, the next time you see a man (or woman) in uniform, take time to shake their hand and say thank-you. For me personally, I want to say "Thank-you" to Kyle, Patrick, Ron, Mike, Brian S., Brian D., Chris, Tony, Ramone, David, & Luis for allowing me to put a face to those who serve, you are all special and unique and I am honored to know you!
I will be leaving tomorrow evening for North Carolina to deliver quilts, 31 total. So many people have pitched in and helped make this possible, it is incredible the way it came together!! I am excited to be able to visit Ft. Bragg and honored to be attending a memorial service while there. I will also, along with the Hunsberger's, get a chance to spend some time with Travis' unit again. Can't wait to meet their families!! I will post pictures of quilts and the trip when I get back.
God bless you all, and God bless America!

Quilt countdown

Donations of money, quilt tops, quilt blocks, and completed quilts have been coming in faithfully! Thank-you, thank-you! The number needed is 25, and if I've counted right, we are at 22. That is awesome!!! Tentative plans are to leave for North Carolina Tuesday May 26th. I will take all that are finished with me, hopefully that will be the whole 25. If you are working on a quilt and it won't be done on or before the day I leave, that's OK, it can still be used! I will try and post some pictures of the completed quilts so far, next week. When the men were here in February, we talked about the quilts and what it meant to them, and several expressed the need for others to receive the show of support and encouragement such as they did. I have learned of two units who have each suffered three losses. One of those lost 3 men the day after Travis died back in June. The other also lost 3 men this past October. One of those men was the father of a newborn. LeAnna and I talked and tried to decide which unit to bless with quilts...how do you choose? I feel God tugging at my heart telling me to take on both. That would mean around 25 more quilts. Right now I have 4 complete, 2 in the process of being made. That leaves 19. Obviously, I cannot sew them all myself. Lord knows I want to...I'm asking once again for your generosity of time, talent, and finances to see this next project to completion. I mentioned it a month or so ago and had no real idea where the next batch would go. Now that I know, I feel more compelled to get moving. What's my time frame?...well...I REALLY would like them finished as soon as we possibly can. Originally I was hoping for mid-April, that isn't feasible anymore, so I'm going to say end of May. I'm flexible, but that's my goal. We made the last goal in 2 1/2 months, surely we can do it again :) You may ask what's the rush...Travis' unit is deploying again and I'd like them to be in on the quilt-giving before they go. (They don't know I want them to do that yet.) So...will you once again partner with me to show honor and respect to the men and their families who give so much for each of us every day? Thank-you in advance, and God bless you. And as always...God bless America!

More pictures from our first Quilt Project. . .

I apologize for my picture postings being out of order, but I have put them on here at the time I receive them. I've had these for awhile, just haven't had a chance to do anything with them. I figure most of you don't care, you just enjoy looking at them :) These pictures are from Steve, Ronda, and Kelsey's visit to Ft. Bragg in January when the men returned to the States. It was great for me to see some of them with their quilts. Hope you think so too.

Pictures from the visit of ODA 7132

We were treated to an amazing meal on Friday evening at the home of Steve and Ronda. On Saturday evening, Jeff & Peggy and their Sunday School Class hosted another fabulous meal. Each included family and friends of the Hunsberger's. Both were wonderful times of sharing and getting to know these awesome men, and hopefully, letting them get to know us as well. On Sunday they were honored during our service at Wakarusa Missionary Church. It was a whirlwind weekend full of many activities! I know that saying goodbye on Sunday was difficult, I felt as if part of my family were leaving me. I can only pray they know in some small way what an impact this visit has had on my life and on the others as well. I also pray this won't be their only visit, that they too felt like they gained a new "family". God bless you ODA 7132, and thank-you again for serving and protecting....

A visit from the Men of ODA 7132...

What a privilege and honor to meet the men Travis served with! They are in town for the weekend visiting Travis' family and friends. They returned to the US the end of January, and made the 13 hour drive to Wakarusa to connect with this part of Travis' life. To say this group is amazing is an understatement. They blessed me with a couple of unexpected and very special gifts as a thank-you for this project. I am deeply humbled by their show of appreciation! Thanks again guys, I will cherish always what you did for me :) If this is what the rest of our military is like, then folks, we are in good hands!!! Not that I ever doubted that, but there is something about meeting in person the ones who on a daily basis are out there serving and protecting the rights and freedoms we hold dear. They are committed to what they do...they believe in what they do...and they are grateful for our support. Please let us never forget that freedom is not free...somewhere someones son, husband, father, nephew, cousin is doing his duty to uphold what this nation stands for. And they are striving to help other countries have what we have. Sometimes at a great cost...so the next time you see our flag waving, stand a little taller, and when you see a soldier in uniform, thank him (or her) for doing what most of us can't (or won't) do, and for heaven's sake, when our national anthem is played place your hand over your heart and sing along! Keep praying for these men and their families and the many others like them, and for our nation that we would remember the principles we were founded upon and bless God, so He will bless America...

I will have another update with pictures in a day or so. For now, we're getting ready to go meet up with this awesome group of men and spend a bit more time getting to know them. Remember, this project is not yet complete, there are more who need to see our love and support...won't you help?

a Wedding. . .

I also have not had a chance to post pictures from the wedding of Travis' brother Kyle. Kyle has enlisted with the Indiana National Guard and is currently at Basic Training in South Carolina. Please pray for Kyle and his new bride as well as Steve,Ronda,& Kelsey as they make these new adjustments in their lives. Kyle has a strong calling to also serve his country. I trust you all had a blessed Christmas. We enjoyed our time and it was filled with mixed blessings :) A time of sadness for those no longer with us, but also a time to celebrate the birth of our Lord and the reason we live!

I have yet to make contact to receive the CD of pictures of the quilt delivery. I am as anxious to see the pictures as alot of you!! Hopefully this week. . .

What is in store for 2009. . .as I have stated many times, I feel this project is to continue. We still have funds thanks to many generous people, to carry us for awhile. I have several people who have offered to make quilts once the holidays are over so I'm praying they don't forget :) I am also offering something new. Beginning January 12th, you will be able to stop by the store and ask for a Quilt Block Kit. You can pick up as many as you like, I only ask that you return them in a timely manner. . .completed. Once enough have been returned, either myself or another volunteer will assemble them into a quilt. Hopefully this will involve more people, especially those who want to help but have neither the time or funds for a whole quilt. Another option, while my supplies last, is a full Quilt Kit. I will need to know in advance if you'd like one of these and my number of these are limited. I do need these completed and returned within 30 days. I'm willing to work with anyone who wants to help our project :) My next goal is 30 quilts by April 1st. I'm sure we can make that or even exceed it.

I'm adding a picture of Travis that has become a favorite of mine. It shows that tremendous smile that those who knew him, loved so well and miss so much! Hope you enjoy seeing it too. . .

We love and miss you Travis!!

Delivered!!!

On December 11th, the first load of quilts were delivered to family members of the men who served with Travis. Thank-you to Toby Yoder and Greg Birr of Wakarusa Missionary Church for taking the quilts down for us! The men report an overwhelming reaction to our gift of love and support...pictures will be made available to me soon for posting...check often for updates!

Steve and Ronda and family will be taking a few more with them in January when the men return to base. Our next goal date is March, 2009 for a substantial number of quilts to be donated. Three have already been turned in with the promise of more once the holidays are over. Thank-you again to the many, many people who have helped make this mission a reality! I have 11 completed quilts, 2 that need the binding, 3 at the quilters, and one quilt top still out. That makes seventeen. We need nineteen. I have three cut out and am working on them, plus we had a Quilt Guild from Nappanee in the store this evening and three of the ladies took fabric with them to do 4 more quilt tops/complete quilts. I'd really like everything wrapped up by December 9th. It looks like it's going to happen!! Did I doubt it would? At times. . . but not really. A few donations have come in and that will help with the remaining expenses, although more is still needed. My digital camera is not working, but as soon as I can, I will post pictures of the newest quilts. They are wonderful and I want to share them with you! I apologize for the short length of this post, but I have been burning the candle at both ends and really need to call it a night, but knew I needed to give an update. Many thanks for all the support and encouraging words!!
God bless you all! It's a sisterhood of sorts, hard to explain, but if you're a part of it, you know what I mean. Let me explain. . . I'm trying desperately not to let the events of the past month get "in the way" so to speak, but it's hard not to be affected. Someone I loved dearly is gone from this life, and while I know Lisa is in the presence of God, my heart still aches. I won't "get over this" in a few weeks, or months, this has had a profound effect on our whole family. I'd be lying to say I haven't asked "why?" Why Lisa? Why now? But I'm straying a bit. . . today I went into the store on my day off to work on some of the quilts for the project. There were three waiting for the binding to be put on. A task that would take about an hour for each one, maybe more. Some of our "regulars" were there for monthly club and offered their sympathies and asked what they could do to help me. I told them why I was there and immediately two spoke up and said, send them home with us, we'll do it. One of them has already given a monetary donation and the other has already donated a finished quilt, but they saw my need, and were there for me. Thank-you, thank-you, Carolyn & RoseAnn, you blessed me so much today. Two of my nieces and I started putting together a memorial quilt the day before Lisa's viewing, we were pushed for time, Janet, a dear co-worker, volunteered to take it home with her that night and finish the piecing so it would be ready in time. I just got it back from Sara, who quilted it for me, free of charge, as a gift to me. Jeanette had already donated the fabric as her gift. I was struggling with having to finish it so. . . Janet took it home tonight to bind it for me. Incredible friends, incredible people. People I may not have met if it were not for our love of quilting. I was interviewed this week by a gentleman from the Elkhart Truth, he asked "why quilts for the soldiers?" Well, what better way to show care, concern, and love. It's what we know, it's what we do. My hope and prayer is that every time they use one of our quilts, they will be reminded that someone cares, someone supports them. . . just like my quilter family has done for me in these past few weeks. God bless you all!

Many to thank...

Well, I have managed to finish two quilt tops and give them to Michaela to quilt, and I have a third one started. I'm so excited! It's great to see tangible progress. I know people have committed to making them, but having them in my possession is a comfort :) Now to find time to do some sewing too! I have five quilts cut out and ready to piece, just need to sit down and do it. Pray I will be granted some "down" time in the coming weeks so I can accomplish this. I know I will feel much better when I have met my own personal goals. I received a call from a gentleman with the South Bend Tribune. They will also be doing a story on our project sometime in the next couple weeks. I'm adding pictures of the most recent quilts. Enjoy!, and have a great rest of the week!
~Dawn

A long week. . .

There are very few words to describe the gamut of emotions our family has been through this past week. The viewing for Lisa was Thursday and was supposed to run from 2 - 8, at 1:45 there was a line formed already and it remained constant all day until the last person went through somewhere around 10:15. What a testimony to the life she led, to the people she touched, not just her, but Jeff, Chelsea, Cassie, & the extended family. How humbling it was to be on the receiving end of so much love, concern, and caring. Our family is close. . . we will get through this. Many times throughout the day one of us would express how we felt the prayers of others upholding us and carrying us all through. At her funeral on Friday, wow, what a tremendous worship experience, just what Lisa would have wanted. A true celebration of her life and the love she had for her Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ. Yes, we grieve, but we know she is safely in the arms of the One she served so faithfully, and we cling to the knowledge that we will see her again some day. Please continue to pray for Jeff, Chelsea, & Cassie in the coming days & weeks.

Today's Sunday edition of the Goshen News featured an article of our project. Nicely done, Justin! Thank-you!! It's time for me to turn my attentions back to quilting. My deadline for the first set of quilts is 6 weeks away and I need to get busy!! I'm updating the photo display with a few more pictures. Be sure to check it out.

On September 30th, the boy's Soccer team at NorthWood High School honored Travis by retiring his jersey number (16), and also by creating a new award, the Travis Hunsberger Defensive Player of the Year Award. It is all personal. Around 1:00 this afternoon I received a frantic phone call from my niece to come quickly, my nephew's wife Lisa, was gone from this life. She had a bad migraine and was sleeping in, around noon her 18 year old daughter went to check on her and could not wake her. She called her father and he raced home to find that his beloved wife had already passed on. I'll probably get her age wrong, our family is so large I lose track, but she was late 30's maybe 40 at the most. Needless to say, we are all in shock. . . numb. . . and at a loss for words. My immediate family is large there is around 114 of us. Other than the deaths of my parents, this is our first loss, and it's hitting hard. God has blessed us in so many ways over the years and I know there is a message here, I'm searching to find it. All day, the song "Our God is an awesome God", has kept going through my mind. Lisa was a prayer warrior, a true woman of God. She loved our Lord & Savior with her heart, soul, and mind, and I am confident she is sitting at His feet right now and smiling that lovely smile of hers. She has no more physical pain, no more emotional pain, she's free. She and Jeff overcame alot of obstacles in their married life, and they had a strong, loving marriage. Her daughters meant the world to her. The Compass Ministry at our church was her passion, she loved kids and reached out to many in ways only she could. She will be missed SO MUCH! Please pray for Jeff, Chelsea, and Cassie, as well as the rest of our family, as we go through the coming days and all that goes with it. So many have stopped in already today with love, support, and prayers. It is greatly appreciated. Make sure your loved ones know you love them, you never know what day is your or their last . . .

Fabric, fabric, fabric...

I have bags of fabric, stacks of fabric, fabric cut and ready to piece into quilts, fabric waiting to be the "back". I probably have enough right now to make another 6-8 quilts, which is great! I still need backing fabric and batting, or the funds to purchase them, and of course, we will ALWAYS accept more Quilt tops, finished Quilts, and fabric :)
I have to tell you another "God sighting". . . there is a website that I like to shop from for fabric from time to time. Their prices are good, and the selection is awesome, especially of Patriotic prints. I hadn't been there in awhile, but last Wednesday when I got home, I had a message on my answering machine from the company, giving me a Promo Code to use for future purchases, which would give me a nice discount. Naturally, I decided to shop some, especially since there were a couple pieces I'd had my eye on for our quilts. I figured it would be better to pay with our Quilts of Honor checking account instead of my credit card if possible, so I left a message asking for a call the next day. Bill, (I cannot remember his last name, sorry) called me back, I explained why I had called and what our project was about. He suggested a bank check or money order, and then said that because of what I was using it for, he would increase my discount. Our project touched him because he is a retired Army Sargent Major. Amazing how God brings people into our paths, isn't it? He also told me to call if I need anything else! So Bill, if you read this, you really blessed me last week, in ways you don't really know. . . Thank-you!
A lady from a knitting group one of my co-workers is a part of donated a quilt. That was unexpected and added to what we need for December. . . another customer was in today and asked when the quilt tops needed to be turned in, another one I wasn't aware of that is being made. . . last week, again, a customer from the store, gave me some fabric from her "stash" to use for the quilts. . . two of Travis' aunts are piecing quilt tops for us, neither have ever sewed a quilt although they both have sewing experience. . . a lady from Nappanee (another store customer) told me she'd help with the machine quilting. . . and the list goes on. Our lives have been touched by the response, and I know it's only the beginning.
On a personal note, I truly believe the coming weeks are so crucial to our country. If you are a praying person, pray harder, if you are not, start! "If my people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and forgive their sins and heal their land." 2Chronicles 7:14.
The men & women who are daily risking their lives to protect our freedoms, depend on us to uphold them, support them, and believe in them. They are our sons & daughters, brothers & sisters, nephews & nieces, grandchildren, uncles & aunts, mothers & fathers, our friends. . .God bless them & their families, and God bless America!!
~Dawn

Updates. . .

Just wanted to give a quick update on our progress. . . It looks like all 15 quilts we needed by Christmas have been committed to being made/donated. Praise the Lord! Donations of cash are still needed to pay for the finishing of some of those, and to keep this project rolling. I had the opportunity to talk with Steve and Ronda this week and Ronda received an email from her contact at Fort Bragg. They are excited about what we are doing and look forward to receiving the quilts. She also thought of a couple more people we should've included in our original count, plus three more men have joined the Unit. So, if possible (of course it's possible!) we're going to add another 5 quilts to our total for Christmas. And, I really pray that people remember and realize, that this project shouldn't stop with this first round of quilts. So many more men and women need to know we care and are praying for them and are supporting them.
Articles about us were in the Wakarusa Tribune and the Advance News the past two weeks. I have a meeting with a gentleman from the Goshen News this week, and Steve and Ronda also gave information to the Elkhart Truth (haven't heard from them yet). Pastor Jon Andrews stopped in to see me yesterday and asked for brochures to give to a Quilt Guild in Lakeville, and brochures were also printed to be distributed at the Farmer's Market on SR19. If you have a Quilt Guild or Church that may be interested in more information, have them contact me.
Another thought I had was to set up an email newsletter to inform of urgent requests/needs. Not everyone reads a blog every day, but most of us check our mail. If you are interested in being on that list, just send me an email with "add to QOH newsletter" in the subject line.
I must confess that at times I feel overwhelmed and inadequate, but I know God laid this on my heart and He will see it to completion, whatever form that may be.
Remember Ronda in your prayers this week.
God bless you all, Dawn

Quilts update

Home again . . . knowing how I feel about that, I imagine it must be quite a feeling for the men and women serving our country, returning to American soil, planting their feet on familiar ground. Maybe even breathing a sign of relief. And yet, willing to do it all over again if need be. Gives me chills when I think about it . . .

It is with gratitude that I report a nice response so far to this project. Our first quilt was turned in while I was gone, I've added a picture of it for you all to see. I also opened several envelopes containing contributions for expenses which is a tremendous blessing as well! The sign-up sheet passed around at our clubs produced commitments for 4 complete quilts, 3 quilt tops, and offers of cash donations. And I also received a couple of emails offering help or donations. We're on our way! My greatest burden is that this doesn't end with just the first 15 quilts, I'm hoping and praying that the exposure in the papers and the brochures I'm updating, will spur this on.
I'm very new to this "blogging" experience, and with much frustration, tried to create a slide show of pictures. Well, I wasn't able to get it to happen, (guess I need to wait on Jolinda to get home from Africa & help me with that part), so I added them in the regular way. Watch for changes later as well as more pictures as we move along.

I want to share part of an email I received from Jade Wiggins, one of Travis' High School friends. She sent the picture of the rainbow you see pictured on here. This is what she had to say in explanation of it: Before Travis left for boot camp a group of us from high school all went to South Bend and hung out for the night in honor of Travis. On the way there we stopped our cars and all got out (at least three cars of people). There was the most amazing double rainbow. I think the girls cried and the boys just stood there . . . but we all considered it a sign that Travis was going to be ok. It was HIS rainbow. I have had the picture on my computer for years now and finally printed it after Mullet (Travis' nickname) passed. I hope it gives you goosebumps like it does me.
God uses many ways to show His love and care for us. Sometimes we're too busy to see what He's showing us, may our eyes always be open to what He has for us to see.

Thank-you again to those who have already contributed, and to those who are working on their quilts. And thank-you as well for your kind words in the notes you've sent, I appreciate it very much!
God bless you!
Dawn

Greetings from North Carolina...

What a busy week it's been! It was great to see Amanda and watch her play soccer, and get to spend some time with her!! And as always, time spent with family is a time treasured. After many laughs and lots of shopping :), we headed for North Carolina with plenty of stops along the way. I researched local fabric stores and enjoyed seeing how other stores are set up and what they have to offer. Some were really nice, others I probably wouldn't go back to. Tonight we had supper with Michael and tomorrow we are driving into Charlotte for part of the day. Gotta be back in time to watch the Notre Dame game :)
Reports from home tell me things are rolling along and I am excited to get back and start sewing! Articles should soon be appearing in the local papers. Thanks Steve & Ronda! If you have a friend or relative you think may be interested in what we are doing, please send them information.
As I listened to tributes yesterday on the anniversary of 9/11, I was faced with a variety of emotions. Anger again at those who took so many innocent lives, sadness for those left behind, pride in the way our country came together in those days following the attacks. . .thankful to still be living in a place we can call free. Free because of men and women like Travis. . .and even more committed than ever to see this project through. We cannot let our fellow Americans keep serving without some small token of appreciation, some reminder that they are thought of and prayed for. What we are trying to do here is just a drop in the bucket, but maybe it will catch on. If not this idea, then another.
Keep praying for safety and for a sense of peace for those who serve.
I was blessed by an email from one of Travis' High School friends, but that's a story for another day. . .

A little rest...

We're taking off Saturday morning to visit Amanda and watch one of her soccer games. Then on Sunday after lunch we head to Gatlinburg with my sisters & brother-in-laws to meet up with other family for 5 days of hopeful rest and relaxation. From there we will visit Michael in North Carolina before returning home. I plan to take the laptop along and keep up with my "work" on this project. So far, we have some offers to help make quilts and some cash donated. Thank-you very much!! Still have a ways to go, but I am not concerned, God is faithful. I'm looking forward to visiting some quilt shops while I'm gone for some ideas and maybe a few bargains. :)
On Monday, Jeanette Prenkert is presenting the project to the ladies in our sewing clubs for me. I'm anticipating a good response from there.
I'd also like to ask that you pray for Dr. Chuck Ware of Mishawaka Orthopedics. He is the doctor I've been seeing for my shoulder problem. He leaves the first of October for a tour of duty in Iraq, and will be gone until March. Pray for his safety as he uses his gifts and talents to serve our country and our Lord.
It's nearly 2:00 a.m. and I should've been asleep a long time ago. . .keep praying for this project and for the men and women who serve our country as well as their families. And as always, let us never forget those who have given the ultimate sacrifice. . .

Getting started...

Where to begin...at the encouragement of my niece, Jolinda, I'm setting up this blog. I'll do my best to keep it up to date and informative.
I want to start off by offering a big "Thank-you" to Steve, Ronda, Kyle, & Kelsey, for allowing me to go forward with this project. They readily agreed and have been very helpful and supportive and are working with me to get things going. I love to quilt and have made several as gifts. As I shared with Steve & Ronda, several have encouraged me to try selling quilts, but I hadn't pursued it. I had visited the websites that asked for donations of quilts for soldiers who had been wounded and thought it was a good idea, but never got around to sending one. Then we lost Travis...God spoke to me and told me to begin this project. Not to wait for men and women to be wounded, but to use these quilts as a way to show love, support, and honor for the daily sacrifices they make for you and me and our families.
So now we come to our first "mission" so to speak. We are going to make 15 quilts by Christmas for the men Travis was serving with at the time of his death. Seem impossible? Not with lots of prayer and help. Four are already underway with one almost completed. I need people willing to donate their time or resources to see this first phase to completion. Please prayerfully consider how you can help.
I just want to share a story yet on what I fully believe to be an affirmation that God's Hand is in this....
The morning after I visited Steve & Ronda and gave them their quilt, one of our good customers came into the store. She shared how she had been on a website for a product which we carried and came in to buy it. While on this website, she noticed a link to another site to make quilts for wounded soldiers. She decided to print out the pattern and make one to donate. The only problem was that the website didn't give a specific place to donate to, would I happen to know of a place she could donate hers when she was finished? Well, yea!! Oh yes, the pattern she printed...was the exact same one I used for the quilt for Steve and Ronda. Go God!! I look forward to the many more "God stories" I'm going to be blessed with in the weeks to come!
Have a great rest of the weekend!
~Dawn
